Room with a View

2020

This project is a response to the lockdown introduced due to the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020. Being forced to stay at home, the idea emerged to reinterpret the window motif as introduced by Romantic painters such as Adolph Menzel, Léon Matthieu Cochereau and Caspar David Friedrich. These European artists of the 19th century painted their own rooms with a view during a time of crisis and chaos, when the Napoleonic Wars were raging outside. The artists responded to outward chaos with poetic images of idyllic interiors. Faced with a world-wide crisis of a different kind, the view from the window takes on a new meaning.
