The Promised Land

2012, Diplomarbeit

The Promised Land is a story about longing towards the idea of a place, where the hopes of a better life come true. The personal story of the main character of the work: Tali, who emigrated from Germany to Israel at the age of twenty on her own, is a starting point, that refers to the ambivalences, which may occur when the ideal image and reality’s facts collide. The photographs vary between documentary and symbolism.

Jana Koelmel acknowledges the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on which she works, lives and creates — the Turrbal and Yuggera peoples and pays her respects to Elders — past, present and emerging. She recognises and acknowledge them as the first storytellers and artists of this land.
